Carriages

The original Museum was developed to house the W.R.F Bolton Collection of 28 horse-drawn vehicles. Together with carriages from the Queensland Museum's own collection and others acquired since, the Cobb + Co Museum displays Australia's finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles. The entries included in this catalogue comprise the Queensland Museum's collection of horse-drawn vehicles in 1992.

It is the aim of the Cobb + Co Museum to collect a comprehensive range of horse-drawn vehicles that were used in Queensland. Unfortunately this may never be achieved because there were as many styles of specialist vehicles in the horse age as there are today.

The Museum is conscious that a number of significant vehicles are not represented in the collection. These include a simple buckboard, and farm wagonettes which carried passengers and goods. Trade vehicles are also unrepresented - the colourful two and four-wheel vehicles belonging to the butcher, baker, greengrocer, ice man and milko that were common sights in all towns until World War Two.

It is hoped that other specialist vehicles such as hearses, and fire fighting vehicles can also be added to the collection.
