Horse caravan

Description:  This typical Melbourne furniture van was later converted to a caravan for holidays. The original canvas roof was replaced by metal in the 1960s. It is fitted with a pole for two horses.

Colour:  Dark green and black body with red lining; Indian red undercarriage and roof; bright red wheels with black and white lining.

History:  A convenient vehicle which found a number of uses other than as a furniture van. Fitted with improvised seating, it could carry up to 30 picnickers on day trips to the beach. Many a hawker converted a furniture van for his use.

This vehicle was bought from Melbourne to Toowoomba in the early 1950s. (Bolton Collection)
