Twelve local artisans have met the challenge to create contemporary items using traditional skills in our annual Artisans' Challenge exhibition.

The theme for 2013 is The Great Outdoors, and the diverse pieces include a blues guitar, 3D mixed media children’s book titled, A Walk on the Wild Side and an outdoor lounge suite recycled from metal drums.

The challenge for the artisans was to create contemporary and imaginative works using traditional skills and materials such as leather, glass, cloth, wood, silk and even recycled materials.
Some of the artisans on display include milliner Elaine Mergard who created hats for Quentin Bryce when she was Governor of Queensland and four time Dame Mary Durack Award winner, leather plaiter Bill Webb
Other creations on display include:
- Wheelbarrow/squatters chair
- A collection of 5 hats depicting the garden in spring
- A hand carved rocking horse
- Wagon wheel bench seat adorned with Australiana carvings
Artisans’ Challenge will be on display from 14 September to 10 November and all pieces are available for purchase.
