On the day

Under the careful instruction of Pete Trott our artisan spoon maker, participants will use three simple hand tools to create their spoon: an axe, a straight-blade sloyd knife and a hooked knife. Not a single piece of sandpaper is used in the process. Keeping in line with how the early Australian’s did things, participants will use local green wood and they will learn how to read the timber and use the implements to create something uniquely satisfying.

Meet your tutor

Pete Trott has been making wooden spoons since he was nine. The experienced spoon carver from Victoria's Macedon Ranges is one of Cobb+Co Museum’s headline artisans promoting traditional crafts through his involvement in the annual Lost Trades Fair. Pete’s reputation as a great spoon maker mixes well with his ability to teach others. You may have seen one or more of Pete’s spoons in various Australian TV shows as set dressings... if you watch Offspring then watch out for his spoons in Nina's kitchen! Pete is also a headline artisan at the very popular “Spoon Jam” Festival, an annual event in New South Wales attended by thousands of makers.
